Replicarz is at it again. After giving away a pair of gorgeous new 1:18 scale 1966 Lola T90s (Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart) in the last giveaway, there is another Lola up for grabs. Mark Fothergill has provided the new 1:43 scale Lola that Arie Luyendyk drove to victory lane in the 1990 Indianapolis 500. This Domino’s sponsored machine is mounted on a custom base, with an engraved plaque and includes a high-quality acrylic dust cover.
The 1990 Indy 500 was known for many years as “The Fastest 500” as it held the highest average speed (185.981 mph) until the 2013 race. Emerson Fittipaldi controlled the first half of the race, leading the first 92 laps from pole position. Handing problems and blistering tires began to play havoc on most of the field in the second half of the race. The final quarter of the race became a two-man race between Luyendyk and Bobby Rahal. Arie led the final 33 laps after starting the race on the outside of the front row. He took Doug Shierson Racing and Chevrolet to victory lane in his first year with the team.
1990 Lola – Arie Luyendyk, Indianapolis 500 Winner
This was Luyendyk’s first victory in the series and the first of his two Indy 500 wins (1997). Interestingly enough, this was the only Indy 500 victory for Lola in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1996 he set the single-lap and four-lap qualifying records that still stand today. The “Flying Dutchman” was inducted into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame in 2009, and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2014.
