Juncos Signs Sebastian Saavedra for Indy 500

Yesterday Juncos Racing announced that Spencer Pigot would drive the No. 11 Chevrolet in the Indianapolis 500 this month. They followed that up today with the news that Sebastian Saavedra will drive their second entry, the No. 17 car.

Saavedra returns to the series with longtime backer Gary Peterson of AFS Racing. This will be his sixth Indy 500 start, his best finish of 15th coming in 2014 with the former KV Racing team. Oddly enough, Saavedra will have all six of his starts with different teams. His first came with Bryan Herta Autosport in 2010. In 2012 he was with Andretti, then Dragon in 2013, and KV in 2014. His last start in 2015 came with Chip Ganassi’s team.

“I am pleased to announce that Sebastian Saavedra will drive the No. 17 AFS/Juncos Racing in the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500,” said Juncos Racing owner Ricardo Juncos. “Sebastian’s IndyCar oval and Indy 500 experience will be an asset for our team especially considering that this will be our first year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”

The 26-year old Colombian is excited to be back. “This is something I am very proud of and looking forward to. We have been working on this project for some time now and making it a happen is a great feeling for all the parties involved. I feel very blessed to have such a unique and special relationship with AFS for nine consecutive years. In particular with ‘’The Boss” Gary Peterson. After a year off, it is gratifying to be back on the race track. I’m approaching this year with the right mindset. I am looking forward to a strong month of May for both AFS and Juncos Racing.”

With 32 confirmed car and driver combinations, the last expected entry for the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 will be from Buddy Lazier’s team. They are expected to return with Chevrolet power.

The IndyCar Grand Prix is set for Friday and Saturday, with Indy 500 practice scheduled to begin on May 15.
