Ryan Hunter-Reay, the defending race winner at Barber, got off to a good start in Birmingham on Friday. The Andretti Autosport driver lead both practice sessions, with similar best times in both, and the quickest lap of the day. Ryan desperately needed this, after his disappointing exit at Long Beach two weeks ago. The combined practice session results show Sebastien Bourdais in second place, Josef Newgarden in third, with Will Power and James Hinchcliffe rounding out the top five. The rest of the top ten spots went to Helio Castroneves, Marco Andretti, Juan Montoya, Scott Dixon, and Simon Pagenaud.
Though he was ninth, it wasn’t a good day for Scott Dixon. His car suffered electrical problems and his car was hauled away for repairs. The defending Verizon IndyCar champion has finished runner-up the last four years at Barber. You can see highlights from Friday’s practice sessions in the video below, from IndyCar’s YouTube channel.
