Friday’s Verizon IndyCar practice at St Petersburg officially kicked off the 2014 season. Though there were occasional sprinkles, none of the teams had to break out the rain tires, and there were no major incidents to report. While Honda appeared to have had the better day, the Chevrolet-powered cars weren’t too far behind.
The first practice session was led by last year’s St Pete winner, James Hinchcliffe. Justin Wilson was second quick, with Takuma Sato, Will Power, and Sebastien Bourdais rounding out the top five. Ryan Briscoe (sixth) was the fastest Ganassi driver, and Juan Montoya turned the most laps (22) during the practice session.
The second practice session was led by Sato, and Graham Rahal was second. Power was third, teammate Helio Castroneves fourth, and Simon Pagenaud fifth. Briscoe was sixth again, and Power turned the most laps (25) in the afternoon session. Qualifying for the Firestone GP of St Petersburg begins at 2 PM ET on Saturday.
