Will Power found himself in familiar position on Saturday. He won the Pole Award at Sonoma with a blistering lap of 1:17.2709. It was his fourth pole of the season, and the 28th of his young career.
The Firestone Fast Six drivers included Briscoe, Power, Bourdais, Dixon, Castroneves, and Franchitti. All three Penske cars, both Target Chip Ganassi drivers, and a four-time open wheel Champion made for an impressive field.
These six drivers, coincidentally, were the top six finishers in last year’s race at Sonoma.
Briscoe will join Power on the front row, with Bourdais and Castroneves in row two. The third row will belong to the two Target cars, with Dixon fifth and Franchitti sixth.
It was no surprise to see Power on the pole. He was the fastest in both practice sessions, despite seven different teams making up the top ten. With his bonus point for winning the pole, Power now has a six-point lead over Hunter-Reay heading into tomorrow’s 85 lap race.
The green flag will waive around 4:30 pm ET on Sunday. The GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma will be aired live on NBC Sports Network.
