Rahal Letterman Lanigan will field a second car (No. 16) in Houston and Toronto. The team announced that Luca Filippi will climb into the seat to pilot the part-time car at both of the remaining double-header events this season. After making his IndyCar debut last season for Bryan Herta Autosport at Mid-Ohio, Filippi also competed in Houston and Baltimore. Luca has been in the GP2 series for six years, winning three races in 2011, where he finished second in the championship standings.
Last year, the Italian driver finished in 16th at Mid-Ohio, 22nd at Baltimore, and 10th and 19th in the two races in Houston. The RLL car will have associate sponsorship from IMPCO, a supplier of alternative fuel systems, and FightSMA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a treatment or cure for spinal muscular atrophy.
In addition to IndyCar and GP2, Luca drove in the Italian Formula 3000 series in 2005 where he won the title. He also made his Formula One test debut that same year. In 111 career GP2 series starts, he has a total of six wins and three poles.
Filippi will tackle Houston first, which is the next event on the IndyCar schedule, set for June 28 and 29. The double-header event in Toronto is scheduled for July 19 and 20.
