Indy 500 Field Takes Shape

MarcoThe field is set. Well, sort of. The 33 cars that are entered in this year’s Indianapolis 500 all qualified on Saturday. Tomorrow, nine drivers will have the opportunity to win the pole for the 98th running of the Indy 500. Ed Carpenter had the fastest qualifying run today, but the times will be erased tomorrow. Ed got both of his ECR cars in the Fast Nine, with JR Hildebrand. It was not a great day for Chip Ganassi though, as all four of his cars struggled. They were the 15th, 17th, 19th, and 23rd fastest on Saturday. All cars in the top nine had an average speed over 230 mph.

The weather was nearly perfect. It wasn’t windy, it was cool, dry (for the most part) and there was plenty of cloud cover. Kurt Busch was sitting in the top five early in the day, when he left via helicopter for North Carolina to run in the NASCAR Sprint Cup All-Star race on Saturday night. Unfortunately, he was bumped out of the top nine later in the day, and will not be eligible to make a run at the Pole on Sunday.

The nine drivers that will compete for the Indianapolis 500 Pole tomorrow are: Ed Carpenter, Carlos Munoz, Helio Castroneves, James Hinchcliffe, Will Power, Marco Andretti, Simon Pagenaud, Josef Newgarden, and JR Hildebrand.

Tomorrow morning, positions 10 through 33 will be set when cars qualify from 10:15 to 1:30. The Fast Nine shootout for the Pole will start at 2 PM. ESPN3 will have coverage from 10-12, and ABC from 1-3 for the Pole shootout. Teams and drivers will have one more full day of practice on Monday, which runs from Noon to 6 PM.
