It’s race week for the Verizon IndyCar Series, but the news keeps trickling in. The biggest headliner this week was the announcement of Dario Franchitti as the pace car driver for this year’s Indianapolis 500. It’s a perfect fit for Franchitti, even though he never won the pole for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. The three-time 500 champ will be driving a black Chevy Camaro Z28, which looks and sounds like a real monster. Be sure to check out the videos below, one from IMS’s YouTube channel, and one of Dario’s announcement on Good Morning America.
It was reported by Diego Mejia that Columbian driver Carlos Huertas had secured the second seat at Dale Coyne Racing, alongside veteran driver Justin Wilson. The team has yet to confirm their driver for this weekend’s race at St Petersburg.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing had a scare on their way to St Pete, as their hauler caught fire near Louisville on Monday night. There was no damage to the cars, just some equipment in the trailer. The team was able to head back to their shop in Indy, and are now back on the road headed south. Driver Graham Rahal had a popular Twitter conversation with Dale Earnhardt Jr on Sunday night, and both drivers had agreed to doing a car swap.
James Black had reported late Monday night that Jim Nabors will sing “Back Home Again in Indiana” one final time at the speedway this year. The legendary acter and entertainer began singing the song in 1972, and has decided that 2014 will be his final time. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will not make any announcement regarding the future of this particular tradition until after this year’s race has concluded.
