Will Power Wins Race 2 in Houston

powerThe ultimate gut punch. That is what Helio Castroneves experienced this weekend in Houston. It was championship déjà vu for team owner Roger Penske. Helio’s gearbox issue that occurred while he was leading the race put him out of contention on Sunday. To say that there was a momentum swing the championship, would be a massive understatement.

With all of the championship drama, the race came down to a great battle between Scott Dixon, and Helio’s teammate Will Power. Will went on to win the race, his second of the year. Dixon finished second, and James Hinchcliffe joined them on the podium.

If you’re Dixon, you couldn’t have possibly dreamed of a better weekend. If you’re Castroneves, you just experienced your worst nightmare. Entering this weekend’s event in Houston, Helio held a 49 point lead in the championship over Dixon. Two days later, Scott now leads Helio by 25 points heading into the final race of the season in Fontana.

How strong has Dixon been over the second half of this season? Following the race at Iowa earlier this season, Scott was 92 points behind Helio in the championship, in 7th place. Simon Pagenaud is mathematically out of the running for the championship, so it will officially be a Penske and Ganassi battle for the title. It’s a very fitting way to end the season, given how the last few races (and off-season driver moves) have gone down.

Today’s race ended on a sour note, with Dario Franchitti getting airborne and tearing through the catch fence on the final lap. The replays were chilling, but thankfully he, Takuma Sato, and EJ Viso were all okay. Dario was taken to a hospital, complaining of back and ankle pain. According to multiple reports, there were about 15 fans in the grandstands being treated for injuries, though none were considered very serious.

So after 18 races, it all comes down to the last one to decide the championship. The Manufacturer’s Championship will also be decided in Fontana, with both Honda and Chevrolet having won 9 races this season. The final race of the season at Auto Club Speedway is on October 19. The race can be seen at 8 PM ET on NBC Sports Network.
