Despite making slight contact with the wall in practice, Dario Franchitti managed to capture his 5th pole at Toronto on Friday. He grabbed his 32nd career pole at a track where he has won 3 times. He will be joined on the front row on Saturday by Sebastien Bourdais, who gave Dragon Racing their first front-row qualifying result. Row 2 belongs to Will Power and Tony Kanaan, while James Jakes and Scott Dixon will start Saturday’s event in row 3.
The hometown favorite, James Hinchcliffe, did not advance to the second round of qualifying. He wasn’t the only one who missed out though. None of the drivers in the top three of the championship standings made the Firestone Fast Six.
It will be a busy weekend in Toronto, as the series looks to use standing starts for the first time. Teams were given time to practice them today in preparation for tomorrow’s race. Sunday’s race will feature the traditional rolling start.
The last four IndyCar races have all taken place on oval tracks. Things will be hectic this weekend, but they will really calm down after Sunday. From July 15 to August 24, there is only one race (Mid-Ohio) on the schedule.
Qualifying for Sunday’s race will take place on Saturday morning. Both races (Saturday & Sunday) will begin at 3 PM ET on NBC Sports Network. The green flag will waive at 3:40 PM.
