There will be an IndyCar race at Pocono tomorrow for the first time in 24 years. Marco Andretti will be leading them to the line as he captured the pole with a speed of 221.377 mph. A pair of familiar faces will join him at the front. Ryan Hunter-Reay will be in the middle of row 1, and James Hinchcliffe will start on the outside as Andretti Autosport swept the front row. The race will feature a three-wide start as part of the Triple Crown.
Tony Kanaan will be starting in 5th position on Sunday. After winning the Indy 500 this year, he has the opportunity to chase a $1 million bonus in the season-finale at Fontana if he can win here tomorrow. Winning the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown tomorrow would guarantee him a $250,000 bonus. If another driver wins on Sunday, they could earn the $250,000 bonus by winning in Fontana, so Kanaan won’t be the only one to keep an eye on. Team Penske drivers Will Power and Helio Castroneves will start on the inside and outside of Kanaan in row 2.
During Friday’s test session, Andretti topped the speed chart with a lap of 220.963 mph. Compare these times with the NASCAR record speed of 179.598 mph, and that will give you an idea of just how wild this race is going to be. With the aero package and downforce levels IndyCar is using, this race should provide the same exciting racing we saw at Indianapolis.
On August 19, 1989, Emerson Fittipaldi set the track record at 211.715 mph (42.510 seconds) on the 2.5 mile tri-oval. That record was destroyed on Saturday. This is race number 11 of 19 of the season. Helio Castroneves currently leads the points standings by 9 points over last year’s champion, Hunter-Reay. Andretti, Hinchcliffe, and Kanaan are just behind them. The Pocono IndyCar 400 will air live on ABC at Noon Eastern Time.
