Power on Pole at Texas

powerQualifying for the Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway was fast and furious on Friday. Marco Andretti put down a fast lap at 217.553 mph, which put him on the front row. The problem with that, is the guy starting next to him was a full 1.6 mph faster than he was. Will Power blazed through qualifying as if it were a road or street course. His lap of 219.182 mph was 3.5 mph faster than last year’s pole speed.

Five different drivers have earned pole starts in eight races this season, and six different drivers representing five teams have won races. Despite grabbing his second pole of the season today, Power has still not won a race in over a year. Ryan Hunter-Reay and Dario Franchitti will start on row 2, and EJ Viso and Helio Castroneves will be in row 3.

Last year’s winner, Justin Wilson, had trouble from the time their car unloaded from the hauler. He was the slowest qualifying car, only being able to post an average speed of 207.8 mph. Takuma Sato, Tristan Vautier, Simon Pagenaud, and Simona de Silvestro were all assessed a 10-grid spot penalty for engine changes.

Graham Rahal is looking to make up for last year’s last-lap mistake on the 1.5 mile speedway. He had the race won, until his slip up put him in the wall, opening the door for Wilson. Once again, he’ll have his hands full as he will start 19th tomorrow night. The Firestone 550 at Texas begins at 8:30 PM ET on Saturday night, and airs live on ABC.
