Simon Pagenaud Grabs First Career Win in Detroit Dual 2

simonToday was part II of the dual in Detroit. Things always seem to get a little crazier the second time around. Yesterday it was Dale Coyne Racing in victory lane; today it was Schmidt Hamilton Motorsports.

Simon Pagenaud won his first career IndyCar race, which was full of eager drivers from the start. Pagenaud edged out an impressive run from James Jakes and yesterday’s winner Mike Conway for the win. For the second consecutive day, we had a very unique podium at Belle Isle.

After a runner-up finish on Saturday, things got much worse for defending series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay on Sunday. He clipped the wall with his right front tire early in the race, sending him into the concrete barrier. His day was essentially done, but he was able to get back out late in the day, collecting some valuable championship points. He is currently third in the overall standings after seven races.

It was supposed to be a great weekend for Roger Penske. Instead, it was a weekend to forget. For the second day in a row, AJ Allmendinger crashed on the first lap of the race. This weekend left such a sour taste in his mouth, and he feels gutted for Roger, who gave him his second chance. I expect we will see him back in that car sometime later this year. Helio Castroneves and Will Power were both involved in accidents as well.

After Saturday’s race only featured three caution flags, Sunday was a demolition derby early on. On lap 27 there was a pile up featuring 10 cars, and there were already five cautions before that.  Of the first 36 laps, 22 of them were run under yellow. Luckily the caution for the pile up was the last yellow we saw, as the drivers began to settle in.

The biggest casualty in that 10 car accident was Power, who is not having his typical strong season. He’s not alone though. Through seven races this season, the six Penske/Ganassi cars are still winless, and none of them have even scored a podium finish in the last five races. Still, Castroneves is tied with Marco Andretti for the points lead heading into Texas.

The first of three double-header of events for 2013 is complete. Now, the series turns its attention to the ovals, beginning this Saturday night. The next four races (Texas, Milwaukee, Iowa, and Pocono ) are all ovals. The race at Pocono will be the first time IndyCar visits the triangle since 1989. It is also the second round of the 2013 Triple Crown. The Firestone 550 at Texas begins at 8:30 PM ET, and will air live on ABC.
